Smokin Snowboards from Bob Daly on Vimeo.

What can I say about Jay Quintlin…He showed up at our shop back in 1990, and submitted an impressive resume of his snowboarding abilities. He was  like the east coast counter part to Jimmy Halopoff who had just won the California series. So we gave him a spot on the Shoreline team. If you recall Jimmy back in the day he was a bit wild, and would often have a little to much to drink and turn into Rocky Balboa. These antics we’re captured in the now classic “Whiskey” videos.
So if you thought the East coast Rappers vs the West coast rappers was over the top, It was East vs West Snowboarders that First went to blows. To make matters worse, poor Jay was way out numbered. There was kind of a make shift gang of South Lake Tahoe Snowboarders known as “The South Shore Posse” Just add Alcohol, and there was a good chance something stupid would happen. So being a bunch of insecure, overly competitive Snowboarders they did  what made perfect sense to them at the time, They showed up at Jay’s house one day and packed up his belongings and ran him out of town. for real, this is the wild west and South Lake just wasn’t big enough for Jimmy and Jay….I only recall bits and pieces of this event, so those of you with more details feel free to add comments or correct my bad memory.
It was sometime later that Jay took on the nick name “Smokin Jay” I think it has something to do with how fast he left South Lake….or may-be women thought he was Hot! but in either case Smokin Jay continued his wild west adventure on the North shore of Lake Tahoe where the peaceful, fun loving locals excepted him as one of their own. It was there that Jay started making snowboards. Smokin Jay Snowboards humble beginnings 14 years ago started in a round about way on the Shoreline Snowboard team…..kind of…well I’m sure we helped with the nick name at least… Now simply called “Smokin Snowboards” Jay has built up his board’s demand by mirroring some of the characteristics found in boards made at the Mervin Manufacturing factory.
All kidding aside, I m very proud of Jay’s Success, American Made products are the best. I like what he has done, and we’re very happy to be selling his boards here at Shoreline of Tahoe. Let me take this time to apologize for the rough time you endured by a few locals, who didn’t realize how big snowboarding would become. The funny thing is many of those individuals have also made their mark in the snowboard industry, so I know forgiveness is part of the Dysfunctional family known as the Snowboard industry.

This is part of an update from Jaypanther.com, Join the growing number of supporters helping Jay on his way to the 2010 winter Olympics
“I am pleased to write this update after a couple of solid weeks on snow. We have been in Colorado since November 2nd and the training has been great. The first week and a half of our stay we skied a single groomed run working a lot of turn technique. It was a great way to start the season, get my ski legs back, and really fine tune my skiing. The last three days, however, I am ecstatic to report we have been jumping! I have been really anxious to get in the air and the adrenaline has been good for the soul. As you know I worked very hard this summer training a D-Spin 1080 (California Roll) and have been excited to bring it to the mogul course. Yesterday I tried my first ones on snow and had nerves comparable to competition day. I embraced those nerves as moments like that are what I live for, and I am happy to report I landed all three I did. Today I did six or seven more with the same result. It feels great to see hard work come to fruition and I feel confident this new trick will be ready to help me win Selections! I did a California Roll today here is a peek at it, so you can all enjoy it with me……Jay Panther”

The first of a few jumps from our good buddy, Adam “Knievel” Neil.  Yea like Adam is…in his 40′s and decided to take up downhill mountain biking….Fearless if you ask me. As most people his age are complaining about getting old, Adam steps up and delivers big clean airs on his bike. Adam and his family are big supporters of the USSA (United States Snowboard Association). His whole family ends up at Nationals every year. Keep the shiny side up Adam…

It really blew me away when I found out about “Google Street.” Have you seen or heard of this site? I’ve embedded “Market Street,” where Shoreline of Tahoe is located. So let me tell you about “Grandpa Charlie.” This is one of the many nicknames for our beloved head technician. Grandpa Charlie is one of the most loved Shoreline employees. My wife and I often receive compliments about Charlie. “Charlie did a great job fixing my skis, he tuned up my bike like new, and he is so nice to my children.” Charlie this and Charlie that. My wife and I are very happy to hear this. In an age where computers are turning us all into loveless machines, this kind of personal treatment is like going back in time. A time when people would say “howdy” and pass the time talking and relating to each other because relationships used to be important to Americans. I have to take this time to mention what kind of person “Ol Charlie” is so you can truly enjoy the fact that as the Google Street van came by our shop it captured Charlie teaching a three year old boy to skateboard. When I saw this picture of Charlie I yelled across the store, “You’re so Fired!” Think about it purely from a business perspective and this is a total misuse of time. I would think that maybe some employers would fire an employee for this abuse of company time but not me. The more I thought about the odds of the Google Street camera van catching Charlie helping this little kid skateboard the more I was impressed with Charlie’s commitment to treat everyone like a person, even 3 year olds. So if you stop by Shoreline and can’t seem to locate an employee don’t forget to check outside and see if we’re skateboarding for the Google Street cameras.

southshoresnowboardledgins1An unplanned reunion of some of the South Lake Tahoe snowboarding pioneers happen at the inaugural ULLR’S Jib Jam at Lakeside Inn & Casino. Pictured here Eric V Skate Park builder, Randy Walters former Pro Snowboarder turned carpenter, Bob Daly founder of Shoreline of Tahoe, and Jimmy Halopoff of the South shore soldiers Ski & Snowboard camp. The event was a blast, Ullr the Nors god of snow must of wanted to jib because the weather was great! Jimmy was invited to judge the event which had over 70 skiers and snowboarders.

Washed up old South Lake Tahoe Snowboarders still come out to encourage the next generation. Those of us who pioneered snowboarding here in Tahoe are amazed at where the sport has been and where it is going. One thing for sure is there is no end in sight. These new riders keep pushing the limits, and I think that is what draws us old guys to these events to see what is next. There is some ownership to being the first snowboarders to do all we did. Until snowboarding becomes flat with no new horizons you can expect washed up old South Lake Tahoe Snowboarders to still stop by and check out the scene.
