Bonfire and Salomon Rookie Matt Ladley Slays Arctic Challenge143470484_ladleym11
OSLO, Norway–Matt Ladley may not be old enough to buy smokes, but after recovering from a shattered collarbone in December he proved that he still knows how to get high with lofty amplitude and a variety of tricks at the Arctic Challenge where he snagged 2nd place and an award for Best Trick.

“I’m so stoked,” he said. This is the best I’ve ever done at a contest.”

Ladley stomped a huge backside Rodeo, a backside 540, backside 720 and nearly landed a backside 900, in front of a crowd of thousands in Oslo, Norway at Terje Haakonson’s annual event.

2010_world_qp_poster_web-s1The World Quarter Pipe Championships- A Celebration of Transition and Fire
Since the late 90s, before the complete redesign and deconstruction of snowboard contests according the needs of TV and the interests of the large corporate sponsors footing the bill, a “world-class” event was created by a couple magazine editors at Waterville Valley in New Hampshire that would forever change snowboarding. On what was probably a gray spring day in March, 1998, the World Quarterpipe Championships were born.

Over the years, snowmobiles have been stolen from ski patrol, inflatable pools have been ridden on the hill, board bags full of beer have been dragged up the mountain, Ross Power’s Olympic-winning board has been thrown on the fire, hotels have evicted everyone associated with the event, and “contestants” have been pelted with snow and ice as they jump a bonfire on the run-in. It was, and still is, a lawless event run by snowboarders for snowboarders. After a three-year hiatus, the gauntlet fire was re-ignited last March at Tim and Chris Waker’s Timber Ridge for some much-needed celebration of snowboarding.

Once again, 2009 will see the World Quarters back at Timber Ridge, the lawless private resort owned and operated by the Wakers. With the support of the Rome SDS, Red Bull, Oakley, Iceberg and co-founder Pat Bridges, the stage is set for a new rider to be added to the list of legends that have held the title of the best Quarterpipe Rider in the world.

The World Quarters an event that defines the word “open”: any rider, international pro or random kid from Jersey, is free to drop in and compete. There are no VIP tents, no media credentials, no invitation lists and no bag searches to worry about. The mayhem is set to unfold on Monday March 23rd at Timber Ridge. Will Kevin Casillo or Shane Flood make an appearance to try to reclaim their fame of years past? Will the Magic Mountain Motel allow us back as patrons? We’ll see.

So your all excited to ski or ride some fresh powder, you check your favorite ski resorts web site to find them explaining that their conditions our “packed powder” ? say what? yea its that mystery marketing snow conditions known as packed power….this could mean anything from 10 inches of tracked out soft stuff to boiler plate ice. So what do you do? simple, buy yourself some NAS skis from Mervin manufacturing they will carve though any thing those misleading marketing executives come up with to get you on the hill. OH yea one other thing, 4 feet of fresh powder translates to about 40 inches of real snow…take about 2 inches off per foot then your reality will match the marketing departments hipe.

At the young age of only 20, Guldemond has already been snowboarding for 12 years. Competing in the junior USSA competitions while growing up in New Hampshire, his objective to better his snowboarding led him to Lake Tahoe, CA. Soon thereafter he found himself competing with his idols, the pros, taking 3rd in the 2007 Vail Session, 2nd at the Burton Abominable Snow Jam and most recently took 1st in the 2007 Australian Open. Chas was a nominee for Transworld Snowboarding?s 2006 “Rookie of the Year” and “Stand out of the Year” awards. Last season, Chas filmed for Catch the Vapors by Standard Films where he produced an amazing video part for his first time filming in the major leagues.

2009-ski-show-073-copyThe Snowboard industry is a funny one, some times you have to just laugh at the hippies. Take this Idea of some grass root movement that is all the rage in snowboarding, yet it never went “corporate” some how keep pure to the love of the sport…if that existed we wouldn’t know about it. Corporate means cor?po?rate?–adjective
1. of, for, or belonging to a corporation or corporations: a corporate executive; She considers the new federal subsidy just corporate welfare.
2. forming a corporation.
3. pertaining to a united group, as of persons: the corporate good.
4. united or combined into one.

If there is a good idea that you want to get made and sold in market, forming a corporation is a good way to do it. I laugh at some hippy snowboarders because they seem to think these boards grow on trees.  The effort to design, make, distribute, and sell takes a whole year of hard corporate work.  A few years ago we sold gloves from a company that was so anti-corporation, that the next year when we placed our order they lost it, blame us, and never shipped us our gloves…now that is as  unincorporated as it gets.

jeffblogMeet meek mild mannered Jeff Brushie, now the mellow man, married with two lovely kids. Jeff has moved on from snowboarding, but still has his hand in on judging events. For the past few years Xgames has used him to as one of the main superpipe judges. This year the Dew tour used him in both events, slopestyle and superpipe.
If you get a chance to see some footage of Jeff Brushie back in the day, you’ll see the for-shadowing of tricks. Jeff remains one of the stylish rider ever, in any era. Mr. Smooth to you, he was one of the consistent riders who brought snowboarding to the next level. You could still better your riding byseeing him ride. He wife Greta could teach most riders a thing or two too. I can’t wait to see how well their kids ride….
